EvaDishes: Youtube, Gurus, and the Journey

One month of abandoning my blog and i’m finally back! This past month i got into making youtube videos. I mean, i had all the software like Final Cut Pro X and IMovie all on my computer, so with a little push from my dad to make use of them and start filming videos, i did. Here’s what i accomplished:

One month on youtube, a whopping 29 videos later and 123 subscribers.

At first this upset me, i mean, i’ve got a great camera, great editing skills and tools, and I’d say I’m a pretty likeable and knowledgeable girl. The thing about youtube that i realized quick is that theres like a billion people trying to do the same thing your’e doing. Okay, let me rephrase that, theres not a billion …but theres got to be more than a hundred thousand girls out there trying to be big gurus. Half- no, 70% will never get there, but the maybe 30% or less are left in the dust because of a few things I’m going to get to in a second. The whole thing is a lot like show business, which i feel the same way about. So much talent is out there, but theres a lot clogging the scene, so i mean, you may be the next Tom Cruise or Miley Cyrus… i don’t know… but the problem is no one will ever discover you.

Now there’s a few things i’ve learned with youtube gurus. It’s a HUGE whoring process. When i say that, i don’t mean girls are walking up and down streets with leather boots and a big sign. In theory, thats basically what they’re doing, but not literally. On major gurus videos, just about every fifth comment you can find one like this “HEY GUYZ, pleease check out my channel I’m a guru and yay i love videos and im so good so go subscribe!”. Do you know how annoying that can be!? And the thing i’ve come to realize is; this begging actually works!

Click on their channel and low and behold they have around 1000 subscribers, and the worst videos anyone could possibly ever try to film. Now that’s just not fair.

You’d hope these pleas of channel viewing would stop there, but no. These girls who decide to devote their lives to advertising themselves don’t stop with just comments on videos. No, they reach out to you. Message you and attach videos, comment on your channel some very short message such as “OMG GIRL LOVE YOUR CHANNEL COME LOOK AT MINE NOW”.

Girl! Please! Let’s calm it down a segundo. Wait, that means summer in spanish… i think O_o.
Wait a second! We don’t need to beg. Honestly, if a girl was just like “hey, i like your videos. whats your instagram?” or “hey we should talk more” then i’d be soooo much more likely to see who she was! I like making friends, and this whole “subscribe to me and ill subscribe back” thing is just so unfair to me, and so impersonal.

If youre looking to start a successful youtube guru channel, join the line. It’s tough, and even if your videos are at the level of a successful, hundreds of thousands of subscriber channel, its going to take a while to get discovered, unless youre lucky. I have come across some girls who have only been on youtube for a month and somehow have partnership, but only have 5 videos that arent even that good. Some things i will never understand…

Dont give up is my overall advice. I see successful gurus with 200-400 videos. It could take that long to get discovered. Some of these girls have been making videos for years and years and years. So all i can say is dont give up because im sure perseverance is the only way people can really earn what they want on youtube.
